Olympic Winter Games kick off in PyeongChang
Going from the 8th to the 25th of February, the Olympic Winter Games will be held in PyeongChang, South Korea. At this event, elite athletes will be competing head to head in the name of their home country. Some of the most recognizable athletes that will be participating in the Winter Olympics will be Shaun White, Lindsey Vonn, and Ted Ligety.
“I always look forward to the Winter Olympics,” said snowboarder and junior Prep student Drew Angelini. “I love watching the snowboarding events, and I especially love watching Shaun White during the events.”
There are also six new countries in this year’s Winter Olympics: Ecuador, Eritrea, Kosovo, Malaysia, Nigeria and Singapore are all now actively competing in the events occurring in South Korea. The most popular events happening in the games this year include ice hockey, snowboarding, freestyle skiing, and speedskating.
One of the major controversies this year in the Olympics is that the NHL is not allowing its players to participate, unlike years before.
“I think it’s kind of stupid, for lack of better words,” hockey player and sophomore Thomas Francoeur continued. “If you want more people to watch the Olympics, then have the best talent participate in the games. No disrespect to those that are qualified to play in the games, but they simply are outclassed in almost every aspect by NHL players.”
While the Olympic Winter Games may be missing a big chunk of its talent pool for hockey, the events will still be extremely entertaining. The competitions are being streamed now by channels such as NBC and the USA Network. Make sure you catch the action of this year’s games because it is certainly something you won’t want to miss.
