The Cathedral Prep tennis team bowed out of the state tournament Friday morning against Philadelphia’s number one seed, Unionville. The Indians recorded a win over the Ramblers after they captured a 3-2 in the quarterfinals. The hard fought matchup took almost three hours as all five courts went to a third and deciding set, the first time that’s ever happened in PIAA state competition history in tennis. Family, friends, and tennis enthusiasts alike witnessed a historic matchup taking place at the Hersey Racquet Club. Unionville would eventually go on to capture the state team championship after recording wins over Council Rock North in the semifinals and Great Valley in the championship match.
Cathedral Prep ends their season 14-3. They notched wins at the State College Tennis Invitational, capturing the Region title for a fourth straight year, and winning the District 10 Title.
“These guys have had such an impressive season, and I’m very proud of them,” said head coach Patrick Grab. “They have accomplished so much, and I’m very proud of the work they’ve all put in.”
The season isn’t completely over for the Prep tennis team, however, as the state singles and doubles competition takes place this Friday and Saturday, May 22 and 23, also at the Hersey Racquet Club. Matt DeMarco will represent Cathedral Prep in the singles tournament as will Alec Thomas and Joe DeMarco in the doubles draw. The three punched their tickets after winning gold at the District 10 Tennis Tournament held at the Pennbriar Athletic Club.
