With the coming of the new school year, there have been changes made in the cafeteria concerning new staff and a change in the food provider. Metz was in charge of the food for the past three years, but this year Food First Culinary Associates has taken over.
In a letter sent out to parents at the beginning of the school year, Brandon Lucas, executive chef of Food First Culinary Associates wrote, “Our mission is to make each meal served to our clients fresher, healthier, tastier, and just plain better. In keeping with our mission, we realize that nutrition isn’t nutritious unless it is eaten. By offering the highest quality items that are relevant to today’s student diners, food goes into mouths instead of the trash.”
Craig Palotas, a senior this year said, “It feels like they’re putting more effort in the quality of the lunch. Improvements on the taste, and the overall feel of the lunch room atmosphere has been better.”
In the previous years, Mr. James Wrigley, the former head chef at Cathedral Prep, sent out weekly emails pertaining to the lunch options for the week. This year has lines of individual entrees of the same choices each week. Food First has recently begun sending out the menu for this week, which shows they’re slowing getting into the routine of the school and will soon be second habit for them.
Mrs. Patty Stano, who is an active employee in the cafeteria said, “The menu is still posted on the website. Also, it is posted on the line. All you you have to is go and look.”
With a new organization in the lunch comes many changes.
“Better food, more variety, more things the kids like,” Mrs. Stano continued, “There are a lot of new things to expect out of the new lunch. Being that it’s brand new, there are issues. But issues can be resolved over time. You will see a much better presentation all the way around.”
Many people have mixed feelings about the new change. There’s been improvements to the food, yet an increase in price. Last year the price was $3.75 for a meal deal. But now, it is $3.95. They’ve also done some renaming of the locations, giving a new feel to the lunch room. With all of that said, there is a lot of optimism for this year with new entrees and plenty of room for improvement.
