PIAA cancels spring sports, season comes to a close

The Cathedral Prep track and field team had just finished their conditioning at the end of practice on a beautiful sunny day. And then it all took a turn when someone decided to look at their phone.

The word spread quickly and speculation was up in the air about what might happen in the near future, but for some, the track season had already ended, even though it never had the opportunity to start.

It wasn’t just track that felt the pain. Lacrosse, baseball, tennis and volleyball all felt it.

The COVID-19 pandemic may have been going around for a while, but the scars of what could have been still ripple loud and clear for some.

“I was dreaming of this senior track season for much of the past three years,” said senior track runner Devan Bailey. “Your senior track season is very much the peak of performance you have at the high school level as a distance runner.”

But even though Bailey may have had this taken away, he had the foresight to know that it was near.

“You can’t be upset if you knew it was going to happen,” said Bailey. “But I dreamed of the moments I was going to have this season for years. Of course it hurts.”

The Cathedral Prep baseball team was looking for a successful season, looking to repeat as District 10 champions, and the majority of the team was looking forward to the annual trip to Phoenix, Arizona, to showcase their skills on MLB practice facilities.

The volleyball team was excited for their season under Head Coach Taylor Palowski, improving upon their first ever regular season last year.

The tennis squad was on the hunt for the playoffs during the 2020 season, looking for revenge after losing in the quarterfinals of the state tournament. The team was loaded with district medalist Thomas Prichard in the lead role.

Lacrosse was looking to improve off of their District runner-up campaign last season. Lead by Jace Peterson, the team was seeking to enter the state tournament and go deep into the play offs.

Unfortunately for the 2020 season, we won’t have these wonderful spring sports practicing and playing at the Hagerty Family Events Center or Dollinger Field, but we can be sure to acknowledge that once society is back on their feet, Prep sports may resume with glory.
