Before this year, Tiger Woods hadn’t won a Masters Tournament since 2005. Back in 2005, with the way he had been playing, it seemed like Woods would always be in contention to win the Masters. That win was his ninth major victory and began a stretch of four victories in a stretch of eight majors. Woods was on a roll and playing the best golf he has ever played.
But then, Tiger’s golf game took a huge downfall. Over the last decade, Woods was having personal and physical problems that were causing him to miss a lot of time on the course. These problems affected his playing abilities and caused him to not be able to be a contender in many majors.
Then, Sunday happened.
This past weekend at Augusta, the Masters, which is the biggest golf tournament, was going on. Everyone was trying to win the beloved green jacket, which Tiger had won in 1997, 2001, 2002 and 2005. In the final round on Sunday afternoon, Tiger was near the top of the leaderboard, and the excitement of fans clearly was buzzing.
Everyone was wondering, would Tiger finally be back on top again? Is he the best pro golfer ever? Or, if he wins, does that make him the best golfer ever? But no one could talk about any of that unless Woods could pull out the big win. Tiger trailed the first 12 holes, but as the final round was coming closer to an end and the top of the leaderboard was dropping down, the veteran Tiger was the only one who could stare down the pressure, as he has been in many situations like this before.
Woods was able to birdie the 16th hole in crunch time which gave him a two shot lead with two holes left. Tiger headed to 18 with that same two-stroke lead. As thousands of people huddled around, Tiger had a very high chance of being back on top. Tiger had a nice drive on 18, and the tournament was sealed when he chipped safely onto the green and just barely missed a par putt before tapping in for his fifth green jacket and 15th major championship. Tiger was back on top.
