On Wednesday, May 9, Cathedral Prep announced the school’s new head basketball coach would be Steve Piotrowicz after former head coach Mark Majewski announced his retirement.
Piotrowicz attended Cathedral Prep from 2005-2008. While at Prep, he played basketball all four years, including two years on the varsity team.
After Prep, he continued his academic and athletic career at Penn State Behrend. After just one year, he transferred to Gannon University where he played basketball for three years under Coach John Riley.
Not only did Piotrowicz play basketball, he also has coaching experience. Last season he was an assistant to Coach Majewski at Prep. He was a full-time assistant coach for two years at IUP, and in 2015 he was the assistant to Coach Colpoys.
As a former player and now a head coach, Piotrowicz is excited to use his experience of being a former player to help him connect to today’s players. “Relatability to the student-athlete as far as the grinds and what it takes to win at the next level now can give that knowledge and learning experience to put in the program.”
As far as being the new coach, there are a lot of new big expectations for Coach Piotrowicz to continue the tradition of a strong basketball program. In terms of expectations, he said he wants to the team to “compete as hard as we can, be an unselfish good working team, and make Rambler Nation as proud as possible.”
As far as his goals he would like to achieve while coaching at Prep, his goal is ultimately to win a state title. “Other goals we have is to compete at a high level, to teach young men on daily basis, and to further their career in college.”
