Staff Profile: Jorge Barrios

Jorge Barrios, a Cathedral Prep senior and staff member of The Rambler, loves to play basketball outside of the classroom. Jorge has had a passion for the game of basketball since he was five years old. His uncle Jared was in high school at the time and played basketball for his high school team. Jorge developed his passion for the game while watching his uncle play.
The Prep senior has played basketball all throughout his life, starting at the age of seven. His first real experience with basketball was at the east side YMCA. When he became old enough, he then started playing for his middle school, on the JV team in 6th grade. Being the smallest on the team, he still managed to score more than 100 points over the course of the year as a starting point guard. As he moved into 7th grade, Jorge played point guard again, as he continued his success. His finalized stats ended with over 100 points in a successful season for his team.
Although the record of 8th grade season wasn’t great, the staff writer for The Rambler managed to set some career highs. In a single game, Jorge sunk five 3-point field goals from the floor. Along with that, in the same game, he scored 27 points. While leading his team through the playoffs, he remembers his championship game in middle school. “The score of the game was only about 17-14 in favor of my team,” he said. “This game was the lowest scoring game for both teams, as the defense displayed in this game was awesome.”
His high school career started as a freshman, helping his team achieve an undefeated record. Jorge decided to take a break from the court in his sophomore year, and played for the St. James CYO team. He played the 6th man role on that team, as most of the team was seniors, and seniors end up in the starting lineup. Moving on to his senior year, he is unable to play for the Prep and CYO basketball team, as he suffered an ACL tear while playing. Although he can’t be on the court physically, he is still looking forward to watching his CYO team from the sideline
