Why you should take Public Speaking in high school

Public Speaking class at Cathedral Prep teaches students the art of public speaking. Public speaking is involved in many careers, so the fact that this class is available for students at Prep is very beneficial to the students who decide to take the class. Public speaking can help a person’s social skills and help people become more confident in their speaking capabilities.

English teacher Mrs. Vomero currently teaches Public Speaking. She gave some input on her class.

“The main goal is for students to improve their communication skills, speech proficiency, poise, and self-confidence in public speaking situations,” Mrs. Vomero said. “There are many benefits to this class.  Some of the benefits are building confidence, improving critical thinking skills, improving communication skills, and conquering your fear of public speaking.”

Public speaking class not only helps students with speaking but also, it can teach students how to be better presenters.

Mrs. Vomero also gave some feedback on what exactly this class teaches students.

“This class teaches you to prepare and deliver various kinds of oral presentations, including impromptu, informational, demonstrative, and persuasive,” she said. “Students will become familiar with what makes a good speaker and a good speech, explore ways to overcome nervousness and self-consciousness, improve all types of verbal communication, and practice respect when speaking and listening to others.”

Social skills are also another key component of public speaking.

“This class helps you form connections through communication,” Mrs. Vomero said. “Being able to communicate clearly will help in your career and boost your confidence and interpersonal relationships.”

Public Speaking can be a daunting class to take because it involves students going outside their comfort zone, but if the students really buy in, it can help them in their future endeavors. Mrs. Vomero gave her final input on why students should take this class.

“Public speaking is extremely important in life,” she said. “Knowing how to speak allows you to form connections, influence decisions, and motivate change. Without communication skills, the ability to progress in the working world and in life, itself, would be nearly impossible. Public speaking is one of the most important forms of communication.

Junior Isaiah Tavani talked about why he took this class and what he has gained from it so far.

“I mainly took this class because I wanted to learn how to public speak before I went off to college,” he said. “So far, this class has helped me a lot in my speaking in front of crowds and being more comfortable in a public speaking setting.”

Public Speaking is a great elective option at Cathedral Prep. Public speaking can teach you social skills, confidence in speaking in front of crowds, and skills that will help you through your adult life. Mrs. Vomero’s Public Speaking class may seem daunting because it is “public speaking,” but if you push yourself and try your hardest it has many benefits that will help you in the future.
