The following op-ed piece was written by Cathedral Prep senior John Dill. All opinions expressed are his own personal opinions.
Last week there was a Letter to the Editor published in the Erie Times-News that talked about the Prep-McDowell basketball game that took place on Jan. 23. The letter called out not just the Prep students, but the administration as well. The woman who wrote it was upset that after the huge win the Prep students were running around Erie chanting “(expletive) McDowell.” Yes, we as students should not have done that, but there is no way the author of the letter can pin the blame on the administration of Prep.
The woman said she thought Prep was a religious institution and that the administration would instill those beliefs on their students. As a senior at Prep, I can say that our Catholic beliefs are and always have been present in every single class I have ever taken. What this person probably doesn’t know is how extremely disrespectful McDowell was earlier this year at one of their pep rallies. They dressed up in Cathedral Prep uniforms, and someone dressed up as a priest. They then went on to make fun of how Prep prays before everything that we do. I feel that the letter that was published in the paper was very unjust and should have not been published.
All the sour feelings that these two arch rival schools have against each other are starting to surface once again because of the big basketball game that will be taking place this Friday at McDowell High School. This letter to the editor is just adding fuel to the fire that has already started between the two school communities. This game will be just as intense as the first game, and the crowd will be a huge factor because the gym will be jammed full, and the two student sections will be right down next to the court.
