After Tuesday night’s win over the #3 Armstrong Riverhawks, the Cathedral Prep hockey team is heading back to Consol for the second time in three years. With a 9-5 finish, it was a game of cat and mouse for the hockey team. After the first period the Ramblers were up 3-0 with Trevor Faulkner scoring just under 30 seconds into the game, and Hunter Emerson and Brandon Gotkin also adding to the goal cushion. It looked like it would be a breeze for the team as they started to play like that for just a couple of minutes, allowing Armstrong to knot the game up at 3-3.
Both teams were capable of scoring in quick little burst as Joe Kelly and Richard Vicary of the Ramblers added goals to make it 5-3 Prep. Yet again it seemed as if Prep couldn’t be stopped going into the third, but the Riverhawks proved to be a tough match as two of their players scored in the first 5 minutes of the third period. Tied at 5-5, the game was up for grabs. The Ramblers were resilient though, as Jacob Ordos scored the game winning goal with plenty of time left. This wasn’t the end of Prep’s scoring ability as junior Trevor Faulkner scored a natural hat trick in one shift, making it a 9-5 final score in favor of the Ramblers.
The hockey team will take on top seed Bishop Canevin in the Pens Cup final at Consol Energy Center tomorrow on St. Patrick’s Day. Tickets at the gate are $12 if you plan on driving down. Come support the Rambler hockey team as they try to win it all for the first time since 1997.
