Cathedral Prep’s winter sports season is underway for sports such as basketball, wrestling, swimming, indoor track, and bowling. This season marks the first that Prep proudly has women’s teams representing the previously all-male school. With the state championship the women’s cross country team won in the fall, the future looks bright.

On Dec. 2, the women’s basketball (JV and Varsity) season kicked off with their first game against Cardinal O’Hara. The men’s team (JV) also played that day against Erie High School.

Senior Tori Mayes reflected on the bittersweet season, saying, “In my last year, I look forward to hanging out with my team and winning.”

As for wrestling, their season began Dec. 10 against Trinity Area High School. Their anticipated match against rival, McDowell High School, is on January 4th (at home).

The swimming and diving men’s and women’s teams hosted their annual invitational Dec. 10 at the Hallman Aquatics Center.

Varsity women’s swimmer Haley Palmer said, “States is when I get to see all my hard work throughout the season finally pay off, but I can learn and be a leader until then.”

Indoor track began Dec. 5. Varsity runner Sarah Clark commented on her upcoming season.

“Track taught me group work and how to be a good teammate,” Sarah said, “helping me become a better leader.”

The bowling team had their first match of the season on Dec. 7. Upperclassman Elena Kacprowicz reflected on her experience stating, “As a mentor, I’m looking forward to teaching the younger girls how to succeed.”
