Mr. Puskar is a determined educator who is in his second-year teaching at Cathedral Prep. With a 20-year background in sports broadcasting in Erie and experience teaching as a professor at Mercyhurst University, Mr. Puskar likes to bring real-world experience to his classrooms. His experience has allowed him to create a great learning experience for students in classes like Public Speaking, Mass Media, and Marketing.
Mr. Puskar describes his teaching as hands-on, focusing less on the textbooks and more on practical experience. He wants his students to explore media through a range of platforms, whether it is writing, broadcasting, or even television production. His goal is for students to gain real-world skills.
“Let’s pick up a camera,” Mr. Puskar says. “Let’s pick up the headsets. Let’s do a podcast.”
When asked why he chose to become a teacher, Mr. Puskar remembers his time mentoring interns as a broadcaster. He found joy in showing his knowledge to younger people, and when the chance to teach at Cathedral Prep came up, he took it.
“I was ready for a new challenge,” Mr Puskar said. “[I] had that teaching bug in me, and I really wanted to see what it was all about at the high school level.”
Although he was nervous about teaching for the first time, he was ready for this new challenge, and this new challenge ended up giving the joy he had teaching interns, but instead of interns, it was students.
Junior Maeve Melody’s took Mr. Puskar’s Marketing class last year.
“I loved that Mr. Puskar’s class was very hands-on and interactive,” Maeve said, “and he is helpful, enthusiastic, and passionate!”
Outside the classroom, Mr. Puskar is a man who enjoys the simpler things in life. He loves landscaping, gardening, and spending his time outdoors. He is also a Cleveland Guardians fan and loves attending local and regional events. His teaching methods, influenced by his sports background, connect by showing determination and patience, skills that he believes can help his students both in and out of the classroom.
“I’m a homeowner,” Mr Puskar says. “I enjoy landscaping, gardening, just, you know, doing projects around the house here and there.”
Mr. Puskar is dedicated to helping students develop their media knowledge. His innovative teaching methods and genuine passion for student success make him a great member of the Cathedral Prep family.
