Grasyn Peterson is currently a junior at Cathedral Prep and a transfer student from South Carolina. He is a junior editor for The Rambler and additionally plays men’s golf. In comparison to his old school, he likes the teaching style of Prep’s teachers better.
“I feel like I’m learning a lot better than I would at my old school,” he said.
Grasyn believes that Prep offers more opportunities for success. He states that in his old school opportunities were given to students that wanted them, while at Prep, they push you more into a higher state of success. This is shown through the various programs offered at Prep, such as dual-enrollment, pathways, and AP credits.
He says that the most confusing thing to learn at Prep are the academics because Prep “pushes students to achieve more than what they think they can.” He did not think the teachers would care much, but he is grateful they do so that they can open him to more opportunities.
For Grasyn, the hardest thing to adjust to when switching to Prep was the schedule. Rather than the typical block schedule, Prep carries a 9-period schedule. He also says that it was hard for him to adjust his time management accordingly, as he has a job, plays a sport, and gets a significant amount of homework, but says he has improved at it and does most of his homework during classes free time.
He says that he has gained the skills of preparation and public speaking while attending Prep. He procrastinates less due to the strictness on deadlines and the greater consequences enforced. This led to him taking his work more seriously in comparison to his past school.
Other students have helped him get to know fellow students, teachers, and where his classes are. They also informed him of what classes are more fun to take and what he can look forward to at Prep that the counselors could not.
Grasyn says that he wishes he would have been able to experience more of Prep’s football games and rallies as they offer a sense of community.
Though he loves his time at Prep, he misses the people at his old school and what he got to experience there. He most looks forward to Prep’s annual Sports Day, where classes compete against each other in various sports and games.
