Scientists have found a new asteroid called 2024 YR4. They originally thought that it would be passing by Earth, but now they are reporting that there is a slight chance that it will impact on December 22, 2032. NASA now tells us that the chance of impact is 3.1 percent.
The asteroid measures 40 to 90 meters in diameter. It would cause major destruction if it hit Earth, potentially even kill a city. That is why some are calling it a “city killer.” But scientists say there is still a very good chance it will pass by Earth. Scientists will continue to monitor it to get more accurate information.
NASA and other space scientists are monitoring the asteroid closely. They use powerful telescopes and computers to measure its speed and direction. Over time, they will learn more about where it is going. If the risk of impact stays high, they might take action. Luckily, they’re already conjuring up plans. One possible plan is to break the asteroid into smaller pieces. Letting it burn up in the atmosphere.
Another idea is the DART mission, a plan to try and alter its orbit.
“The DART mission does show our potential to significantly deflect some objects,” said Prep science teacher Mr. Brian Markley. “This could become an option if the impact probability were to increase significantly.”
Although asteroids can be scary, they mostly fly safely past Earth without impact. Luckily, scientists are tracking this one, and they will keep us informed as they learn more. To keep up with asteroid information, one can visit sites like the American Meteor Society. Space has its dangers, but scientists are dedicated to tracking possible threats so the planet can be protected.
