The monthly Student Spotlight article highlights a student at Prep who has shown admirable integrity in academics, extracurriculars, school life, and overall character. The month of February is no different as we feature sophomore Colette Speros. With her involvement in numerous activities in and out of school, she strives to be a resource for others and accomplish her goals.
Coco’s name is spread throughout Prep through her integral involvement in many activities, sports, extracurriculars, and leadership positions. She is a member of student council along with being a sophomore class officer, both of which assist her in representing her class. Coco is also a varsity volleyball player at Prep and plays on a travel team. Along with volleyball, Coco runs outdoor track. Affiliations with many teams, activities, and groups brings along many goals and aspirations.
“I want to try new things and branch out as I become an upperclassman next year,” Coco said. “It’s important to me to try things I haven’t done before and go out of my comfort zone. At the same time, I want to make sure that I support my friends and classmates with their clubs and teams by going to watch their games and achievements.”
Coco has also played a key role in Prep’s volleyball team. Last year she was awarded MVP for the varsity team along with another teammate during the sports assembly at the end of the school year. Despite her being a sophomore, Coco has been a huge source of leadership and fire for the varsity team ever since she was a freshman.
“Our volleyball season as a whole this year was awesome and impressive considering how young our team is and how far we’ve come since just last year,” Coco said. “We really put in a lot of work and made it to state semifinals. This season is something to be proud of, and it will be one I remember for a long time.”
Her success and passion for what she does doesn’t go unnoticed.
“Coco not only is a talented athlete, she is also a wonderful person and teammate”, Hannah Devine, assistant varsity volleyball coach at Prep, said. “Her willingness to learn and grow is great, and her hunger to be better makes her the ideal athlete to coach. She supports and encourages her teammates, which gives a big impact on morale.”
As for the academic side, Coco has an established standard that she holds for herself, one that she never fails to reach. She continually wins the highest QPA award for her class at quarter sessions and she was honored with being named Woman of Prep at one of the assemblies last year.
Coco shared that her father has played an important role in her character and motivation to accomplishing all that she has done and will continue to do.
“My dad has played a big part in pushing me to be my best,” Coco explained. “He helps me to be accountable and motivates me to work hard, and I am grateful for that. He has always shared the traditions and memories he had when he went to Prep, and it encourages me to do the same and be a part of that.”
Coco Speros is a student at Prep that has a bright future ahead of her. As an underclassman, she has exceeded the average and went above and beyond in all areas she associates with. Coco shared a piece of advice that has aided in her overall success.
“Be where your feet are.” she said. “It’s important to focus on what you’re doing when you’re doing it. It’s easy to get distracted but staying mindful will help you control the things you can. This is a skill I hope to get better at because it’s such a helpful thing to be able to do.”
