The rain did not stop the Cathedral Prep students from celebrating the Blessed Mother during this year’s Mary’s Day. Wednesday was filled with faith, gratitude, and love between the students and Mary, the mother of our Lord.
Mary’s Day features traditions such as letter writing to students and faculty, eating cinnamon rolls, looking back on the seniors’ memories, and watching the dancers perform. The most significant tradition of the day is celebrating Mary and saying goodbye to the seniors. The May Court leads the student body in prayer and Scripture in the Cathedral. The May King and Queen give a personal testimony to how Mary plays a role in their life. Then, the May Queen crowns Mary with a flower wreath. Finally, the seniors lead the procession out of the Cathedral for the final time as a school community.
This year’s elected seniors on the 2025 May Court included: Tia Taylor, Julia Dieteman, Olivia Hutchinson, Kayla Bogdanski, Devin Easter, James Burkett, Nick Kupniewski, and Owen Carson. The elected May Queen was Sarah Teed, and her escort was Declan Toohey.
Mary’s Day is an anticipated event for students and faculty as it holds much meaning to the Prep community.
“Mary’s Day is such a special time with many special traditions,” junior Bella Speros stated. “The traditions keep the legacy of Villa alive and going. As a junior, I enjoy writing letters to the underclassmen as they did to me years ago. The letter writing makes everyone feel welcomed.”
“My favorite part of Mary’s Day is seeing the community come together,” junior Connor Laird also shared. “It is fun to celebrate the day as one family.”
“I enjoy writing the letters to people for Mary’s Day,” junior Addison Baldi said. “It is so nice to see who thinks of you. It uplifts your heart reading the messages.”
With all the fun events that take place on Mary’s Day each year, it is easy to forget the reason everyone comes together to celebrate. The day is meant to honor Mother Mary. The May Court helps the school to honor her by giving examples of how to live a life in Mary’s virtues. It is also a final day to say goodbye to the seniors and the 2025 community that Cathedral Prep held. Mary’s Day, rain or shine, will always be a highlight of the students’ and faculty’s time at Prep.
