After a deep playoff run and coming just shy of a state title, the Cathedral Prep hockey team is entering the 2025-2026 season with unfinished business to attend to. They want to send a clear message: they are coming for it all.
With a strong returning core and a promising group of freshmen, Prep will open its season against the Greater Latrobe Wildcats Oct. 2. A win in this game could set the tone for the entire year.
“We’re the team to best this season,” senior forward Chris Bruschi said. “We have nine seniors with the experience and capabilities to dominate. We have been skating since June, and our coaches have built the structure we need to succeed.”
The Ramblers will need that preparation against a Greater Latrobe squad known for its depth. Chris is confident that Cathedral Prep has the tools to come out on top.
“Greater Latrobe is a great organization, yet I know we have what it takes to win the season opener,” Chris said. “A win against a strong team like them will boost confidence, especially for the younger guys, and give them a taste of what winning feels like.”
Despite graduating nine seniors from last year’s team, nine more look to take their place. They are not rebuilding, they are reloading. Key additions like a new stud goaltender have brought energy and stability to the team.
“With the addition of our new goalie, I think we are fully prepared for this season,” Chris said.
One of the younger players who really wants to make an impression is freshman Cam Friedrichsmeyer, who will be making his varsity debut.
“It would mean a great deal to me along with the rest of the freshmen to win [our] first varsity game ever,” Cam said. “My only goal for myself is to treat every shift like a tryout. I need to skate hard and make the most out of every opportunity.”
Cam expects the Ramblers to play a high-tempo, unselfish game.
“Expect a fast game that consists of heads-up hockey, and non-selfish plays,” Cam said. “We need to win the footraces and 50/50 battles. It’s going to take speed, physicality, and skill.”
Even before being physically prepared, Chris believes the key to success is to be mentally strong, even when down on the board.
“We can’t let the lows be too low and the highs be too high,” he said. “When we get momentum, we need to stay calm and continue playing our game of hockey.”
After last year’s heartbreak in the state final, the Ramblers are even more determined this year. With puck drop being Thursday, Oct. 2, the Ramblers are ready to take on the quest for the Cup.
