West Side Story

West+Side+Story

Starting tonight, Thursday, May 7, at the H. David Bowes Auditorium, Cathedral Prep and Villa Maria will present their 5th theatrical production of the year: West Side Story. The classic story—written by Arthur Laurents—is a modernized version of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Set in the streets of New York, two gangs battle for territory. The Jets are a Caucasian gang, led by Riff (Brian Buseck), and the Sharks are a Puerto Rican gang, led by Bernardo (Sam Sweny). Ironically, as the tensions between the two gangs rise, Tony (Jack Kelly), a Jet, and Maria (Amy Estes), a Shark, fall madly in love with each other. In a brilliant sequence of song and dance, West Side Story illustrates Tony and Maria’s pursuit of their forbidden love, despite the severe opposition from friends and family.
This show has been an amazing experience. It is a classic story that has lasted for years and is one of the most beloved musicals of all time. Under the direction of numerous directors and choreographers, the cast of West Side Story has received top-notch direction in portraying the story in an almost Broadway-like fashion. It is an incredibly talented and enthusiastic cast, so if you have the opportunity to see it, you definitely should. It is a show that will surely amaze.
The show is directed by Father Mike DeMartinis and will take place May 7-9 at 7 p.m. and May 10 at 2 p.m. Don’t miss your chance to see this one-of-a-kind classic!
