The following article was not a difficult article to write. However, due to the phenomenon explained in the following article, the senior author of the following article could not find the motivation to quickly finish the following article. The phenomenon explained in the following article is known as senioritis, and it has taken the seniors of Cathedral Prep by storm.
The website dictionary.com defines senioritis as “a decline in motivation or academic performance that supposedly afflicts some seniors in high school, especially in their last term.” This is a fitting definition. Though some seniors don’t feel motivated to try in the first semester of senior year (or throughout their entire high school career), the lack of motivation soars during the second semester. After grinding through the first semester, most seniors have entertained the thought “Haven’t we done enough?” They’ve worked hard for three and a half years in high school, and the one remaining semester seems unnecessary.
“Just give us our diplomas already!” they say, as their teachers continue to give more and more assignments to them. Once a senior gets admitted into their desired college, finding motivation to complete assignments, study, and do any type of learning becomes even more difficult.
Senioritis doesn’t only affect seniors though. The teachers who instruct the seniors also struggle with getting their students to exert the effort necessary to succeed in their final year of high school. When asked how it has affected his students, Mr. Hubert commented that he has seen the “typical lack of articles,” written by his journalism seniors.
Senior physics teacher Mr. Biebel commented, “Senioritis is worse than a zombie plague.” Wise words from a wise man.
Senior Brian Stark had something to say about senioritis. “In my daily Prep life, I don’t feel the urge to do well. I just choose to pass,” he said. “That’s it. As long as I pass I’m fine with it.”
Fellow senior Trey Deitrick stated, “As a senior, strive for partial credit.”
SGA president Douglas Spizarny claimed, “[I had senioritis] since freshman year, always feeling a lack of motivation, but somehow in senior year it got even lower.”
Clearly, even the best and brightest of Cathedral Prep are affected by this affliction. Hopefully the seniors can find some motivation to get through their final quarter at Cathedral Prep. If not, it’ll probably be fine though.
