Hockey team starts playoff run with win over Chartiers Valley

hockeyteamThe hockey season is coming to a close. With the start of the playoffs, the Ramblers only have a maximum of four and a minimum of one game(s) left, and each game is do-or-die for the rest of the season. Prep has been impressive all season with a 16-4-2 record. Led by junior all-stars Ben Eliason and Trevor Faulkner, and senior all-star goalie Grant Kennedy, the team looks to make a deep playoff run.
The team just has to win two games to make it back to Consol after a year hiatus, and have to win the Pens Cup to make it to Pagula at Penn State for the state championship game. The path will be difficult, but the boys are primed to do well. They even cut their hair in military style to show that they are ready to go to battle together.
On Monday night the #2 Cathedral Prep Ramblers took on #7 Chartiers Valley Colts at home in the first round of the 2014 PIHL Playoffs. It was a hard fought game, but Prep controlled the game for a majority of the time. After the first period the Ramblers were up 3-2 going into intermission with goals by Anthony Piglowski, Joe Kelly, and Hunter Emerson. After the first, it was all Prep from there. Kelly netted his second goal of the night early in the 2nd. Then team captain Brandon Gotkin scored a power play goal and Jeremiah Ordos scored less than a minute later. The Colts seemed to be stunned and didn’t score in the period. Shane Cross scored the only goal for Prep in the third, and the Ramblers were victorious with a 7-4 win.
This was an impressive win when considering the hockey team managed to hold two of the league-leading point scorers to just four goals. The hockey team will take on #3 Armstrong on Tuesday, March 11, at RMU, who harbor two of the hottest goal scorers in the league. It should be a good game, and it would be nice if some students made the trip down to Pittsburgh for it.  There is even rumor of a fan bus to take student to the game, but that remains only a rumor at this point. After that game, the winner will head to the Consol Energy Center to try to obtain the highly sought after Pens Cup against the winner of #1 Bishop Canevin or #4 Hampton.
