YouTube: Monetizing popularity

YouTube%3A+Monetizing+popularity

YouTube is a very popular, ever growing website made for the purpose of hosting, and displaying videos for the public. Those movies may be videos that users made on their own, such as video tutorials on how to do things. YouTube manages to host a huge variety of things, viewed statistically by billions of viewers per day.
Of all the video sharing websites out there currently, YouTube is a large point of interest mainly by the statistical information compared to the other options.
The following statistics are provided by YouTube. According to YouTube:

  • In total, YouTube has over one billion users who have signed up for an account.
  • Every day, over hundreds of millions of hours overall is watched from content that has been uploaded to the website.
  • The numbers of hour’s people are watching YouTube is up 50% per month, year by year.
  • 300 hours of video is uploaded to YouTube each minute.
  • YouTube is localized in 75 countries.
  • Half of the YouTube Viewers are on mobile devices.

As has been made quite apparent, YouTube is very popular. It is popular even to the point where some people as far as to make their living off of YouTube as some sort of supplement.
There are groups of people who dedicate a ton of time each day to create videos for the public, and upload them on their account. Their accounts use something called the YouTube Partnership Program. This allows YouTube to display advertisements to the people who watch these videos, and generate a profit, which is given to the uploader. The exact figures of how much money one can make through this partnership program isn’t very stable sadly however. There have been claims that you get paid a dollar every thousand views, although others claim that the number varies quite a bit. The reason behind this, is that you don’t get paid strictly for the amount of views you get on your video, but for the users’ engagement with the advertisement being presented to them.
YouTube has done a good job in making a site on which people can find a large amount of entertainment through their services, as well as provide people who are into creation as a hobby or even as a part-time job with an opportunity to get something out of it as well. Other services have tried to match YouTube in terms of video presence and popularity, but here in America nothing else has come even close to topping it. While in foreign countries this isn’t the case, YouTube still manages to hold its high position here in our society. The people demand entertainment; this service merely provides people to provide it to each other.
While some people believe that Google, the operators of YouTube have different intentions mainly for their own profit, these people still cannot call them out on misleading the people, as the operation of the website is very straightforward.
