For the longest time I was struggling to find a show to watch on Netflix. I was to the point where I decided to watch How I Met Your Mother again since it is my favorite show of all-time and I needed something to watch. As I was progressing towards the end of the show I started to really pressure my mom into watching it. She enjoys the sitcoms such as That 70s Show, Seinfeld, and Friends, but she doesn’t binge watch those shows because eventually they bore her. I was determined to get her to watch at least a season of HIMYM. So I told her that if she watched one season of HIMYM I would watch one season of any show of her choice. She agreed and countered with The Vampire Diaries.
Naturally being a guy I objected to this ridiculous deal, saying, “That show is for girls.” A deal is a deal, however, so I began watching the show, and from episode 1, I was hooked.
The name The Vampire Diaries can be a turn-off to the show for most. The name alone reminds me of the Twilight series that was aimed toward teenage girls when I was in grade school. However, this show is anything but “girly.” As I began watching the show a little bit before Christmas break I began to realize how true the saying “don’t judge a book by its cover” truly is.
The show takes place in a fictional Virginia town called Mystic Falls. The series follows the lives of Stefan and Damon Salvatore, brothers who were both turned into vampires in 1864, along with Elena Gilbert, a junior at Mystic Falls High. There is obviously the drama component that any good series needs to have. This drama component follows the relationships of the characters along with the very important love triangle of Elena, Stefan and Damon, but there is so much more.
Throughout the series villains such as Katherine, Elena’s vampire doppelgänger, and Klaus, one of the original vampires who is also a vampire werewolf hybrid, give you lovable enemies that you love to hate. There is also tragedy as you become attached to certain characters who eventually die. If you were like me and thought that the name was “girly,” I promise you, there is nothing girly or “chick flick-y” about it. With a slew of fierce characters such as Klaus, Tyler Lockwood, and Alarric Saltzman, as well as others you will become attached to the show.
In a world where deciding what show on Netflix to watch next can be just as hard as deciding what college to attend, what football game to watch, or if you should eat that last candy bar or not, don’t let the name alone scare you away. The Vampire Diaries is definitely deserving of your choice. I guarantee you, you won’t regret it.
