Cathedral Prep junior Anthony Nunez has carved himself a very prominent spot within the musical theater department. Anthony never dreamed of being in theater though.
“To be honest the only reason I joined was because my girlfriend was doing Les Mis and made me, but than I kinda fell in love with it.”
Anthony has been a part of several Prep productions since holding background roles in Les Mis, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Mamma Mia until landing the part of Jojo in Newsies. In Newsies Anthony showcased just what he could do with his solos, comedic lines and inspired dancing. His role in Newsies was when Director Father Mike DeMartinis’ really noticed him as a major player.
“He got on our radar with his Newsies audition,” said Fr, Mike. “You could tell he wanted it. He didn’t have the biggest part, but boy did he pour his heart into doing it, and that’s when we knew we had something special in Anthony.”
Fr. Mike went on to praise what Anthony has meant to the theater program and his great potential moving forward.
“I’m really excited to see his growth vocally, and I’m excited to see him pour his heart into any role we give him,” said Fr. Mike. “He’s put on a tough face through some smaller roles, and he still gave it his all and kicked butt doing it. He’s a good kid with a bright future.”
This year Anthony played the judge in Judas of Iscariot and was incredible rocking a Brooklyn accent and nailing a very intense lead. In this years first musical Anthony portrayed weather banker Oscar Shapiro, memorizing over 80 lines, belting solos and having a knack for one lines. Anthony’s growth he displayed during “Curtains” landed him the lead in the upcoming show “Brighstar”. Anthony will be the male lead Billy.
“I’m really excited have my first lead and just hope I can keep improving as an actor and really become one with my character, there’s a lot of things I can improve on and I can’t wait for this part and for everything in store next year. I feel at home in the theater and I hope that shows during my performance in Bright Star.”
