It seems like no one is producing good movies anymore. Every major movie nowadays is either the sequel to something, a remake, based on a game, or based on an old story. And in the cases of movies that are original, more than likely they are still boring, bad, or uninteresting to view.
A great example of sci-fi movies this year is War of the Worlds (2025). The movie was supposed to be a cool and unique remake of the older War of the Worlds (2005), but this movie was considered to be one of the worst of the year, even getting nominated for a Razzie. The plot is confusing and poorly executed.
Another sci-fi movie that attempted to be something different is The Electric State. On paper, the movie seemed like a great idea, the movie was an adaptation of the book. But the movie was deemed disappointing and unexciting by a lot of its viewers.
You would think the remakes, reboots, and spin offs would be the issue behind all these bad releases, but sadly that’s not the issue. Even movies that are original ideas still fall short on being good movies and usually are a bore to watch. A great example is a recent comedy called Play Date that came out. The movie was cliché, had bad acting, and not a single joke was even funny. How do you have a comedy that isn’t funny?
Studios appear to want safe options, but even when they try and branch out and do something different, there’s poor execution which almost leads to a discouragement of original movies being made. Instead, they do remakes meant to be easy cash grabs. Whatever the issue may be, it needs to be fixed.
