The Cathedral Prep girls cross country team won their state championship race, winning their second consecutive state championship title. The victory capped off their season surrounded by teamwork, determination, and faith.
Junior runner Makayla Stutts reflected on how the team handled the pressure of defending their title.
“We weren’t really worrying about the pressure of competing at the state level,” Makayla said. “We all went into this race knowing that we’ve worked so hard, and whatever the outcome was, we were doing it for each other. We had to put the team first and not to worry about any personal thoughts.”
This mentality became a defining part of the program, led by Coach Brown who earned her sixth state title in 12 years as both a coach and a runner.
“This team is so special because you really create a sisterhood with these girls,” Makayla said. “At the end of the day, we become a team who works together through the difficult or easy times. Coach Brown knew that we’ve worked hard and do this for each other whatever the outcome was.”
The season didn’t come without challenges.
“Throughout the season, in many of our races, we never had our full team running as one,” Makayla explained.
Though, the team found a way to battle through it, by staying resilient.
“Our team had to step up in whatever place they were, whether they were first or last,” Makayla said. “Some days we had teammates, including myself, who weren’t racing, but knowing that your sisters are with you throughout it all is a big blessing.”
When Cathedral Prep was announced as state champions, Makayla said the moment was “so surreal.”
“There were so many emotions going through my head, and it didn’t set in that we had won,” she said. “Looking back, all the hard work was worth it.”
After the race, the team gathered in a circle to reflect on their journey and the opportunity that God has given them. “It was a special moment that we’ll always cherish.”
