A few weeks ago, senior Matt Oblich served as Cathedral Prep’s official representative at a special event hosted by the Pittsburgh Steelers during the 2026 NFL Draft. The Steelers invited high school representatives from districts 5 through 10 across Western PA whose programs produced players selected in the draft. The initiative aimed to honor the region’s longstanding contributions to the sport. The multi-day celebration brought together student-athletes, coaches, and NFL officials in a tribute to the talent pipeline that has fed professional football for generations. Western Pennsylvania has long been known for producing elite players, and the Steelers’ event spotlighted that tradition by connecting current high school students with the league’s premier showcase.
“I was chosen for this event by the Pittsburgh Steelers to represent our school at the NFL draft,” Matt said. “The Steelers hosted all western PA high school teams, districts 5 through 10, who had players drafted into the NFL from their school. Their goal was to honor the rich history of western PA high school football.”
Oblich talked excitedly about his experience on stage.
“My favorite part of the experience was getting to go on stage at the opening ceremony of the event and stand right up front with the NFL commissioner and fellow high school football players,” he said.
The 2026 NFL draft took place from April 23–25. Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza was the draft’s first selection. The much-talked about prospect and national champion was taken by the Las Vegas Raiders who struggled last season as injuries and underperforming quarterback Geno Smith led the team to a 3–14 record.
