Navigating the bustling halls of high school can be intimidating for incoming students. To help ease this transition and build a stronger sense of community, Cathedral Prep has implemented its Freshmen Mentoring Program, connecting its newest students with experienced upperclassmen who act as guides, confidantes, and friendly faces.
Freshmen are paired with either a junior or senior mentor. These mentors meet regularly with their groups of freshmen, offering advice on everything from academic challenges and study tips to extracurricular activities, social dynamics, and navigating the school’s unique traditions. Their goal is to provide a peer-to-peer support system that complements the guidance offered by faculty and staff.
The program has garnered favorable reviews with numerous participants emphasizing the support they receive. Several freshmen have said that mentoring has alleviated stress during the first few months, as they felt comfortable reaching out to someone for guidance without feeling foolish.
However, not all freshmen view the program as advantageous or influential.
Some have said that the meetings feel obligatory, and they do not feel the same level of necessity for support as their peers. Others have expressed a preference for mentors who align with their particular interests, rather than those who have differing ones.
Despite differing individual experiences, Cathedral Prep’s Freshmen Mentoring program has successfully achieved it goal of creating a nurturing environment. By utilizing the knowledge and insights of its upperclassmen, the program has remained essential in making sure that each new student feels welcomed, confident, and prepared to excel within the school’s community.
