Christmas break may be a couple of weeks away, but that won’t stop our staff from thinking about the holiday season. This week they wrote about their favorite Christmas traditions.

My favorite Christmas tradition is watching Christmas movies with my family. Being able to do this every year helps us to prepare for Christmas by bringing us together and allowing us to spend time with one another. We also get to offer our own bits of sarcastic commentary when certain scenes come up.

My favorite Christmas tradition I would have to say would be getting our Christmas tree. This is a very fun tradition because I consider the tree a sacred part of Christmas, and getting the perfect tree is very important to have a good Christmas. Cutting down the tree is always a very fun process. For a couple of the years, we actually got the trees from our backyard, and that was fun and simple. But overall it is really nice to go out as a family and select the perfect tree.

My favorite Christmas tradition is going with my family to Port Farms. When we are there, we walk through every aisle of trees to find the right one. When we find the tree, we all take turns cutting it down, and then when we get it we play hide and seek, and have snowball fights. Then, we go into the shop and get hot chocolate and individual things to decorate our tree. Lastly, we usually stop for dinner at IHOP.

On Christmas Day my parents like to hide a small pickle ornament in the Christmas tree. It’s specifically a pickle because it blends in with the tree, and we thought it was funny. So every year after presents they then give me and my siblings the chance to try and find the pickle. Whoever finds it gets bragging rights and an extra Christmas gift. The gift would always end up being a present for the entire family, but it was still technically yours. We do it every year as a small little competition between me and my siblings, and its always a fun thing to do because it’s all luck, and it usually only takes us about five minutes to find it.

My favorite Christmas tradition is going to see my mom’s family in Johnstown. We usually go down between the 24th-26th and sometimes even spend New Year’s with them. I love getting to exchange gifts with my cousins and watch Christmas movies in their basement with their projector.
