Cathedral Prep recently held a children’s book drive, and the whole school took part. The event ran on March 9, 10, and 11, and it gave everyone at Prep a chance to help children in need. Students brought in children’s books that could be passed on to younger kids who may not have many of their own. All donations were collected during the lunch periods, which made it easy for students to drop off books as they walked into the SLC.
“I think its important for kids to build their literacy skills,” senior Jasiyah Slupski said. “Donating old books we don’t use anymore is a great way to contribute to that.”
The book drive also became a friendly competition between grade levels. While each class was asked to bring in books, each grade was also given the task to bring school supplies that matched their grade: freshmen had to bring pencils and colored pencils, sophomores had crayons and chalk, juniors had fun erasers and bookmarks, and seniors finished it off with having coloring books and small toys. These extra items helped make the donations more exciting for the kids who received them.
Students who donated were entered into a drawing for gift cards. The prizes included gift cards to Chipotle, Amazon, and Chick-fil-A. Students who brought in extra books or supplies earned extra chances to win. This way students could be rewarded for using the opportunity to help others.
The children’s book drive was a way Prep students could help make a difference by working together to brighten someone’s day. Through a simple act of generosity, students stepped up with their kindness. The event shows small acts of kindness having a big impact.
