As the first semester came to a close at Cathedral Preparatory School, students faced heavy academic pressure from exams, projects, and the constant drive to earn the best grades possible. With this stress building up, winter break became one of the most anticipated times of the year, giving students a chance to step away from schoolwork and reset before returning for the second half of the year.
Winter break is essential not only for rest, but also for mental health. After months of demanding schedules and academic expectations, students use this time to recharge in their own ways. Whether traveling, staying active, or simply relaxing at home, the break allows students to return feeling refreshed. Despite different routines and destinations, the shared relief from stress connects the entire Prep community.
Some students chose to spend their break in a completely different environment, far from the cold Erie winter. Junior Nikolas Blanchard experienced a change of pace by traveling south for the holidays.
“Over break I spent Christmas in Florida,” Nikolas said. “I spent most of my time going to the beach and golfing, so I was basically living the dream.”
While some students escaped to warmer climates, others embraced winter and took advantage of local outdoor opportunities. These students found stress relief through staying active and enjoying seasonal activities closer to home, proving that relaxation does not always mean leaving the area.
Senior Clark Brown spent his winter break balancing outdoor activities in Erie with trips to Ellicottville.
“I fished in Lake Erie and skied at Holiday Valley,” Clark said, showing how students can stay busy and energized while still enjoying time away from school responsibilities.
Not every student felt the need to travel or seek adventure to make the most of winter break. For many, the time off was about slowing down, focusing on personal growth, and reconnecting with loved ones, which can be just as meaningful as traveling or outdoor activities.
Some students found relief by staying home and prioritizing rest and self-care during the break. Student Francisco Petrone focused on improving himself while spending quality time with those closest to him.
“I spent break focusing on self improvement… like hitting the gym and eating healthy foods,” Francisco said. “I also spent a lot of time with friends and family.”
Although Prep students spent their breaks in very different ways, their experiences all led to the same outcome. Whether through travel, outdoor activities, or rest at home, winter break allowed students to reset mentally and physically, strengthening the sense of unity within the school community.
No matter how students spent their break, the result was a shared sense of relief and renewed energy across Cathedral Preparatory School.
As Clark explained, “Christmas break really just eliminates all stress.”
