FrDetischFather John Detisch is an alumni of Cathedral Preparatory School who graduated in 1980. He is quite well known to the Prep community and is a favorite among the alumni. Fr. Detisch, along with his brothers, aspired to a Catholic education, and Cathedral Prep provided that a great Catholic education. Even though his family lived closer to McDowell, Fr. Detisch chose to attend Prep. He greatly enjoyed Prep, and his favorite things about the school were the long lasting friendship in the school. “Friends became like brothers,” he said. “those kind of friends that last forever, even until today.” With his superior Catholic education, and a few inspirations, he decided to become a priest after graduation.
Cathedral Prep had a great influence in helping him discover his vocation. He had two influences that helped him near his call to the priesthood. He also said that priesthood was the most important experience he got out of Prep.
He was greatly prepared for his life after high school. His education at a Prep enabled him to skip a year in college. He said, “[My] writing skills were unmatched,” which was something that he is proud of.
No person can live without any regrets, and Fr. Detisch had one during his time at Prep. He stated that he had to work every day to be able to pay for his education. That prevented him from participating in any other extracurricular activities outside of school. “Even though I was senior class president, there was so much more I wanted to take part in.”
Being asked what was his favorite memory at Prep was, he did not hesitate to answer: “The journey to and winning of the [PIAA Class AAA] state basketball championship for the first time in Erie.”
One of his favorite teachers was Father Frank Przezpierski. Fr. Przezpierski was one of the people who influenced him to become a priest. Sadly, he died before Fr. Detisch was ordained, which devastated him.

Geometry was one of Fr. Detisch’s least favorite subjects. I am sure many people could agree on that. His favorite subject, unsurprisingly, was theology.

He can also be found frequently at Prep sporting events and has been known to lead the P-R-E-P Champions chant for the Ramblers cheering section in the past. He did note that some things have changed since his time at Prep. For example, one of the things that the students at that time were allowed to do was to be “creative” with their cheers at sporting events. Nowadays, Fr. Detisch said the cheers are “boy scout cheers” compared to some of the old ones.
Having experienced such a great time at Prep, he would repeat those four years “in a heart beat.” For the last question, he answered that he still believes in the school and its mission. It made him a great man, friend, and priest, and he believes that it can do that for many others as well.
