Alumni Profile: Mike Keim (’80)

Alumni Profile: Mike Keim (80)

Mike Keim is a true man of Prep, as he was born a Rambler and he has lived his life as one ever since. Keim graduated from Cathedral Prep in 1980, as a third generation Rambler, and continued the legacy by sending his two sons to Prep as well.

Throughout his time at Prep, Keim made a lot of amazing memories and lifelong friends. His greatest memories as a Rambler come from the golf team, the Six-D Club, and of course cheering sections. During his senior year at Prep, Keim had an outstanding golf season. He came away with a District 10 championship and went on to take an impressive sixth place in the state championships. He played before the PIAA implemented the team championship, but to this day he claims that his team could’ve had a very good shot at winning it, as multiple golfers on his team finished in the top 12 of the state. Among his favorite memories from Prep is Keim’s favorite tradition, the sixth man.

During Keim’s senior year at Cathedral Prep, the basketball team won a state championship and the sixth man was there alongside them the entire time. One of the most memorable things upon his time at Prep includes going to playoff basketball games with close to 20 student buses there to support the team. He will never forget the excitement of the fans, and the reactions of opposing teams to their fan base. The 6th man is an amazing tradition at Prep because of its dominant noise, big number of students, and overall organization. Keim will never forget his time at Prep thanks to these lifelong memories and many other small ones too.

After graduating from Cathedral Prep in 1980, Keim attended Florida State University where he received a degree in marketing. Following his education in Florida, Keim moved a little closer to home to Jamestown, New York from 1985-1993 before moving back to Erie. Since moving back to Erie, Keim has become a very successful financial advisor. He is now a senior vice president at the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) Capital Markets in Erie, where he has worked since 2005.

Keim’s classmates at Prep have really impacted his life. When asked about his class, he claimed that they were very “close and cohesive.” [I] felt as if I was really a part of something special with a brotherly bond,” he said. While he is only really close with a small group of guys from his class, there is still always a warm reunion between him and any of his classmates. Keim’s closest friends will always be from Prep. “There is a tangible bond between any Prep guys that simply cannot be explained or described to anyone,” he said.

Keim has recently become more active in the Prep community by serving as an assistant golf coach for the last four years. He loves the game of golf and wants to share his knowledge of the game with others, but coaching is about more than that to him. Coaching has allowed him to see first hand that there are still good men of Prep in the community. “[I am] proud to say that the spirit and mission at Prep is alive and well with today’s students.”

Mike Keim is a perfect example of a man of Prep and will forever be proud to say that he is a Rambler.
