Our school celebrated Catholic Schools Week from Monday, Jan. 26 through Friday, Jan. 30, with a full schedule of liturgies, themed dress days, service opportunities, and special events. During this time students at Prep were called to reflect on the blessings of attending a Catholic school, including academic excellence, strong moral values, and service in the community.
The week began on Monday with Pajama Day. Students could enjoy a free hot chocolate bar during lunch periods. The Divine Mercy Chaplet was prayed in the library, Bingo was held during lunches, and the school followed a rally schedule.
Tuesday was Denim/Jean Day. The Divine Mercy Chaplet was again offered in the library. In theology classes, students participated in service activities that included cookies and lessons on SSJ history.
Wednesday’s Pattern Day featured a raffle with prizes from Flynn O’Hara and cafeteria gift certificates, along with food. A donation drive benefiting SSJNN and the AHN Cancer Institute took place throughout the week. Students also were also invited to participate in a Bible Study in the library during lunch periods and were able to purchase $1 ice cream bars at the cafe. The administration hosted a Teacher/Staff Appreciation Lunch in recognition of faculty and staff.
On Thursday, students wore dress uniform and attended Mass celebrated by Bishop Lawrence Persico. In all likelihood this will be the last time Bishop Persico will celebrate Catholic Schools Week Mass as he recently sent in his notice of retirement to the Pope upon turning 75. A Campus Ministry Q&A session with Fr. Ben was held in the Upper SLC, $1 s’mores cookies were sold during lunches, and the school gathered for a morning assembly.
Friday concluded the week with sophomores and juniors in dress uniform and freshmen and seniors in spirit wear. The day included Morning Mass, Theology Class Adoration in the chapel, the Junior Class Ring Ceremony, the Divine Mercy Encounter Retreat, and a special schedule due to Junior Ring Ceremony which celebrates the juniors’ official recognition as upperclassmen within the school community.
A drawing was held for students and faculty who participated in the daily themes from Monday through Wednesday. The winners of the drawings won gift cards and other prizes.
Students around Prep expressed their gratitude for their Catholic eduction.
“Going to Catholic school has challenged me and given me the opportunity to grow and succeed,” senior Ozias Dixon said. “I am very grateful for the chance to attend Cathedral Prep.”
