Students were drawn to pie teachers during lunches on March 20 to celebrate Pi Day and raise money for the Second Harvest Food Bank.
”We’re raising money for our community in a fun way that involves other people,” Ms. Mackensen said.
Student Council decided to continue the legacy of former math teacher Mrs. Worline’s tradition of celebrating Pi Day with various desserts by having students pie teachers.
“The teachers’ willingness to be pied and look silly is a testament to the type of teachers we have here at [Cathedral Prep],” Ms. Mackensen said.
During 4th, 5th, and 6th period lunches, students could either purchase three chances for $1.00 or 20 chances for $5.00.
“Students could increase their chances of being picked [to pie a teacher] by [purchasing multiple tickets],” Ms. Mackensen said.

The following faculty and staff signed up for the Pi Day event:
- 4th period: Ms. Kuntz, Mr. Puskar, and Mr. Duke
- 5th period: Dr. Harrington, Mrs. Howell, Ms. Mackensen, Mr. Parsons, Mrs. Quinn, and Mr. Duke
- 6th period: Mr. Clerkin, Mrs. Deau, Mrs. Duda, Mr. McAndrew, Mr. Payne, and Mr. Duke
“Whoever the lucky winners were got to choose which teacher to pie from the line-up of teachers available during their lunch period,” Ms. Mackensen said.
Although each participant was equally likely to get pied, a few teachers managed to avoid it.
”I managed to escape unscathed!” Mrs. Deau wrote.
Science Teacher Mrs. Deau decided to “step outside [her] comfort zone” and “embrace experiences [she] might not otherwise seek out.”
”[The Pi Day event] was an opportunity to challenge myself while also contributing to a worthwhile cause,” Mrs. Deau said.
Pi Day allowed Mrs. Deau to connect with the Prep community in a “lighthearted and joyful way.”
”The good-natured energy [during the event] was contagious,” Mrs. Deau said.
Learning that proceeds from the raffle were being donated to the Second Harvest Food Bank also contributed to Mrs. Deau’s decision to participate in the Pi Day event.
“The Second Harvest Food Bank is a truly vital organization doing important work in our community,” Mrs. Deau said. “I am proud to be part of a community that rallies together to ensure that [people’s] needs [are] met.”

Social studies teacher Mr. Parsons was another participant who managed to avoid getting pied.
”Having fun with faculty and staff [was the main highlight of the event],” Mr. Parsons said.
Mr. Parsons chose to participate in the Pi Day event “to support a great cause and have some fun.”
“[The Second Harvest Food Bank] is a great organization,” Mr. Parsons wrote. “I was happy I could support them.”

AP Physics Teacher Ms. Kuntz decided to participate in the Pi Day event after hearing about the Second Harvest Food Bank’s involvement with it.
“The Second Harvest Food Bank is a vital non-profit organization that helps to feed people in the Erie County area facing food insecurity,” Ms. Kuntz said. “The pie-in-the-face event [was a great opportunity to support the organization] and boost some school community and spirit.”
Ms. Kuntz plans on signing up for next year’s Pi Day event.
”I am willing to face being pied in the future to support a great local non-profit [organization] and encourage students and the wider community to support the food bank and increase awareness about food insecurity,” Ms. Kuntz said.
